Clothing sector sees sales boosted by weather

Pleasant spring and early summer weather saw sales stabilise in the UK clothing retail sector, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Research released by TNS Worldpanel Fashion indicates that in the 12-week period to June 21st, clothing retailers experienced their strongest sales since the three months to November last year, falling by only two per cent.

While womenswear and childrenswear performed well, menswear sales fell by five per cent over the period.

A factor behind the stabilisation of retail sales in the sector could be the continued offering of discounts by retailers to tempt consumers through the doors.

In the 24 weeks to April, 36 per cent of all clothing items were sold with a discount of some description.

According to the Telegraph, TNS said: "Full-price sales declines have slowed but are not expected to return to growth in the near future as discounting looks set to continue throughout 2009."

The Office for National Statistics released figures today (August 20th) indicating that retail sales in July were 3.3 per cent higher than in June.
