Chester's council looks to save city-centre retailers
Officials in Chester are considering ways they can encourage consumers to return to the city centre.
The local Chester Chronicle reported that there is a growing concern that nearby developments, such as Liverpool One and the revamped Eagle's Meadow in Wrexham, are impacting on the number of shoppers heading to Chester.
To try to combat the problem, local councillors are suggesting a new Chester City Management partnership is formed to tackle issues like crime and the cost of parking.
Tory councillor Stuart Parker explained to the paper: "Chester is feeling the impact of a combination of developments, some established, some quite recent or ongoing, in the neighbouring areas and sub region.
"Retailers are reporting a decline in footfall and Chester City Council figures indicate a decline in council car park usage and only a slight rise in park and ride usage over the past 12 months."
If the new body was established, it would look to support small retailers - with the Small and Independent Traders Forum providing several representatives.
Mr Parker said that failure to act could have a significant impact on the city.
"If the council does not respond then there is a danger that Chester continues to see a declining footfall and a migration of users to alternative shopping destinations with the subsequent consequences," he explained to the newspaper.
