Central London sees rise in sales

London enjoyed its best sales in five months this January, as revenues jumped up by 6.5 per cent over last year on a like-for-like basis.

That is according to the British Retail Consortium's London sales monitor, which indicated that retail footfall in the capital was only slightly lower during January than it had been in December.

The research, conducted in association with financial services company KPMG, indicated that shoppers were drawn to the tills by clearance sales and discounts.

Bargains on large homewares, clothing and footwear appeared particularly hard for consumers to resist, although retailers found that trading remained tough after the sales.

"After four months of annual declines, there was a strong bounce back in London's January retail sales," noted BRC director-general, Stephen Robertson.

"There was also a boost from overseas shoppers taking advantage of sterling's weakness and the wide range of clearances," he added.

Meanwhile, cash-and-carry chain Landmark Wholesale has announced that it enjoyed a strong 2008, despite the failing economy. It reported that sales were up by 4.7 per cent between January and December 2008, compared to the previous year.
