CBI asks mayor candidates to support firms

The Confederation of British Industries (CBI) has called on the four leading candidates for London mayor to meet its priorities for business.

Looking to improve conditions for retailers and other firms, the CBI has created a business manifesto, laying out priorities for the candidates to address.

These include investment in the infrastructure, strengthening the capital's skills base and creating a business environment that will attract investment.

Also called for is open dialogue with businesses, environmentally-friendly policies and ensuring the benefits of the Olympic Games last into the future.

Nigel Bourne, director of the CBI's London region, said: "The CBI manifesto is a direct call to all the candidates to address the priorities of the business community and deliver policies which build on our strong foundations and deliver further prosperity and productivity for the capital."

Recognising the role that retail and other businesses have, Mr Bourne also said that mayoral candidates have to work with the business community to maintain London's reputation.

The manifesto presented to was current mayor and Labour party candidate Ken Livingstone, Conservative Boris Johnson, Brian Paddick of the Liberal Democrats and Sian Berry from the Green Party at the mayoral hustlings event on Wednesday.
