Cardiff's historic arcades 'under threat'
Some of Wales' most cherished shopping arcades are struggling to cope in the face of mounting financial pressure and falling sales, it has been reported.
According to WalesOnline, traders in the oldest quarters of Cardiff are sweating on their future following the sudden collapse of men's designer clothing store, Woodies Emporium.
David Hughes-Lewis, chairman of the Cardiff Retail Partnership, told the website that time is running out for the arcades, which lend Cardiff an air of old-world charm compared to other high streets across Wales and the UK.
"The arcades and the independent retailers that occupy them are what makes Cardiff unique," he said. "It's all very well having a Marks & Spencer and a John Lewis, but so does every other major city.
"The arcades are the heart of Cardiff and nobody wants to see that heart ripped out."
He called on traders in the arcades to come together with Cardiff council for a crisis summit next year to discuss how to safeguard their future.
Recently, J A Magson, one of the UK's leading toy and stationary wholesalers, was forced into administration after nearly 80 years in the business.
