Canterbury MP pledges to fight illegal street traders
A local MP has pledged to continue to push for legislation to stop traders from illegally setting up stalls in the streets of Canterbury.
According to the local yourcanterbury.co.uk site, Tory MP Julian Brazier has vowed flight on in his bid to push through a new law that would prevent unlicensed traders from setting up in the High Street.
Earlier this week, the proposed bill was dismissed.
However, Mr Brazier said unlicensed street traders present a "real problem" for consumers and genuine retailers in the city.
He explained to the site: "No one who has tried to walk up the High Street on a busy summer's day could fail to notice it. This measure would clean up our streets and stop the illegal sale of pirate products and, sometimes, drugs.
Currently, many of the traders use a licence granted under the Pedlars Act of 1871. However, officials claim this legislation was designed to allow people to sell things door-to-door and not from stalls in the street.
The proposed bill would clarify the law and force people with pedlars' licences to only sell doors in the manner it was intended to promote.
It is hoped that the new bill will be reintroduced at a later date.
