Cambridgeshire business protest higher parking charges
Businesses in rural Cambridgeshire have expressed concerns that new plans to increase the cost of car parking in the area's market towns could have a severe impact on local retailers.
Huntingdonshire District Council plans to force shoppers to pay higher short-term parking charges in the region's towns.
In a letter to the council's chief executive, Stan Taylor, external relations manager for the chamber, explained that the proposal had raised concerns among local retailers.
"We understand that operating car parks costs money, however, we would like the council to pay careful consideration to the potential negative impact the proposed charges will have upon the district's businesses," he wrote.
"We are concerned that it is shoppers and other short-term visitors to the towns who are being forced to pay more to cover these costs.
"Encouraging shoppers and other visitors to our market towns is key if we are to compete with neighbouring towns and cities and ensure economic prosperity for our local businesses."
Another spokesperson from the chamber said that businesses in the area were already struggling as a result of the rising cost of energy, fuel and raw materials and falling consumer spending.
He added: "Discouraging potential customers and visitors to our towns by increasing parking charges, however slightly, is not going to help anyone."
