Businesses worried about sales in the coming months
New research has suggested that small businesses in the UK are becoming increasingly pessimistic about their future sales.
The latest Corporate Markets Business Barometer from Lloyds TSB indicated that only 28 per cent of firms are now optimistic about the economy. While this compares to 44 per cent in November 2007, it does represent a slight upturn on last month's figure.
Similarly, only 37 per cent of companies said they expect their level of business activity to increase in the coming year. With 13 per cent revealing they expect their sales to slump in the coming months, business confidence is at its lowest ebb since the survey began in 2002.
Trevor Williams, the chief economist of Lloyds TSB corporate markets, commented: "Business confidence has suffered a real blow this month. It's clear that firms are concerned about their prospects - and that doesn't bode well for investment and employment.
"The improvement in businesses' hope for the wider economy is something of an anomaly. But after so many months in negative territory, any upturn in their outlook is definitely welcome news.
"We'll need to wait and see what the next few months bring, before we can say with certainty that this improving outlook is more than just a blip."
