British consumers spend more on beauty products

Consumers from the UK spend more than any of their European counterparts on health and beauty products, a new report has suggested.

A survey from Verdict Research suggested that Brits typically spend £295 a year on health and beauty products - compared to £257 in France and £227 in Germany.

The new European Health and Beauty Retailers report suggested that consumers in the Netherlands typically spend £220 on beauty products and that the Spanish only fork out £200 every year on such goods.

According to the report, the British spending on these products is driven by the easy access to a wide selection of goods and strong consumer appetite for innovative and upmarket items.

Carol Ratcliffe, retail analyst at Verdict Research, commented: "The British are the biggest spenders in the EU. The average UK consumer spends €375 a year on health and beauty products, far more than most of our European neighbours.

"We spend almost 50 per cent more each year than the Spanish for example, and 43 per cent more than the average European. The British are certainly happy to splash out on looking good."
