Borough Market wins prestigious accolade

Borough Market has clinched the best speciality market award in the market of the year competition.

The south London market scooped the accolade, which is run by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA), in January but an official presentation only took place earlier this month.

At the presentation, NABMA chief executive Graham Wilson explained that Borough Market won the award because the judging panel felt it is a "landmark institution in London".

He explained: "It has already won a number of awards and it makes a significant contribution to the community it serves," local portal London SE1 reports.

Mr Wilson went on to say that the regeneration of the market which has taken place over the last ten years has helped to improve the area dramatically and boost the fortunes of a number of small local retailers.

George Nicholson, a trustee of Borough Market, commented: "We were thrilled to get this award, particularly since it comes from our peers in the nation's market industry."
