Blow for Hampshire traders over advertising board ban
Hampshire County Council has refused to back down over its stance on advertising boards placed outside of shops.
The local council has said that traders in Winchester will be fined £90 if they put up A-boards in front of their shops, the Daily Echo reported.
According to the council's environment department, the boards are a safety hazard and should therefore not be displayed.
The move has angered local shopkeepers, including many independents, who rely on the boards as a form of advertising.
Speaking to the local newspaper about the decision, councillor Mel Kendal, said: "We have been having regular purges on A-boards for several years now and would remind traders who have been putting up these boards outside their premises, that they have been doing so illegally."
One of the council's main arguments is that the boards pose a risk, particularly to those who are elderly or who have disabilities, because they are an obstruction.
Nonetheless, Winchester retailers are opposed to the ruling as they believe it will make it even more difficult for them to survive the recession.
