Birmingham Wholesale Markets to move across city
Birmingham City Council has agreed to proposals to move its Wholesale Markets from Digbeth to Witton.
The market, which is one of the largest of its kind in the country, employs over 1,000 people and its origins can be traced back to 1816.
However, the site has become untenable for the number of wholesalers it houses and it is feared that a failure to relocate will lead to significant job losses.
It will be moved three miles to a ready-made site called The Hub, which has been developed by property company Pruprim.
William Rooke, development manager at the firm, said: "The Birmingham Wholesale Markets is currently the largest 'composite' wholesale market in the UK."
He suggested that the move will act as a "catalyst" for economic and environmental regeneration.
Earlier this month, the Caci Retail Footprint 2009 highlighted Birmingham as the second most popular venue for UK retail after London, the Birmingham Mail reported.
Its index suggested that more than £2 billion had been spent in the city's shops over the past 12 months.
