Birmingham urged to help smaller retailers
Smaller retailers need greater support in Birmingham from within the city, as the number of bargain shops in the centre of the municipality grows.
A number of 'pound shops' and budget stores have sprung up in the High Street as a result of a range of conditions that are putting pressure on small retailers.
The Birmingham Post reports that increased taxation on empty shops and the redeveloped Bullring are affecting the main shopping thoroughfare, placing greater pressure on landlords to fill their properties with short leaseholders such as bargain shops.
According to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), more action is needed to tackle the decline of high streets such as the one in Birmingham and provide active support and encouragement for smaller independent retailers.
Denise Craig, FSB West Midlands policy manager, told the newspaper: "Surveys after surveys show consumers enjoy the shopping experience when there is a good mix and variety of shops rather than big chains, pound shops and charity shops. It is a question of balance."
The recent global credit crunch and economic slowdown, coupled with soaring food and fuel prices, are placing growing pressure on consumers and affecting retail sales in Britain.
