Better training for retail workers
The government has revealed that it is setting up a new National Skills Academy for Retail, designed to improve training for people entering the sector.
Skills minister David Lammy said that 70 highly-professional retail Skills Shops would be established in high streets and shopping centres across the UK.
It is hoped that the academy will create a consistent national approach for training and skills in the UK's largest private industry sector.
Launching the scheme, the government said that the country's retail sector currently faces considerable skills and employment issues, which the new scheme will look to address.
As well as training people to work in the country's largest retail chains, the centres will offer skills to people who plan to work in independent shops.
"The Retail Academy will play a pivotal role in helping to ensure the existing and future workforce has the right skills to meet the challenges facing the sector," explained Mr Lammy.
"It will offer pre-employment training for those seeking employment in retail and will also offer a range of provision for retail employees right through to degree level."
Michele Roberts, the director of skills development network, added: "We want learners to access industry skills so they remain inspired and competitive for years to come."
It is believed that retailer is the UK's largest employment sector. A total of ten per cent of all workers are employed in the industry. Retailers generate sales of £265 billion every year - a third of all consumer spending.
