Counterfeit clothes and DVDs seized from Battersea retailers
Local retailers trading at a market in Battersea were targeted by a police raid, which uncovered nearly £50,000 worth of counterfeit clothing, DVDs and computer games.
According to the Wandsworth Guardian, officers worked with trading standards agents and representatives from the film, music and clothing industries in a joint operation to seize fake goods at the market in Nine Elms.
In total three traders were held for questioning under the Trade Marks Act 1994 and could face prosecution.
Les Eames, chief trading standards officer for Wandsworth Council, warned that growing levels of counterfeit DVDs and CDs are in circulation, with many consumers believing they are "grabbing a cheap bargain".
"Many of the people behind the illicit production of these pirate goods use the money they generate to commit much more serious crimes, including fraud, people smuggling, drugs and prostitution.
"People should think long and hard about that the next time they are tempted by a fake designer handbag or a cheap deal on the latest Hollywood blockbuster."
Last month, a market trader from South Devon was given a suspended jail sentence after being found guilty of selling hundreds of counterfeit toys in Dawlish Warren.
