Bad weather blamed for shopping centre delay

Poor weather over the summer and more complex archaeological excavations have been blamed for delays in the construction of a new retail complex in Swansea city centre.

The BBC reported that the developers behind the £30 million project had hoped to have it completed by the autumn. Now, however, it is unlikely to open to the public before the end of the year.

It is hoped that the site will be watertight by the early autumn and that all building work should be complete in time for retailers to move in at the start of next year.

As well as a number of national chains, the complex will be home to several independent retailers, including local company J T Morgan.

"There have been a small number of factors which have affected progress of work on the development including, for example, the length of time it took to complete archaeological excavations at the site and poor weather over the last few months," a council spokesperson explained to the BBC.

Council leader Chris Holley added: "Construction is now at an advanced stage and the benefits of this new complex will soon be there for all to see."

The new retail centre is being built on the site of the city's oldest department store. David Evans closed in 2005 and the building was torn down in 2007.
