AIT highlights danger of counterfeit goods

Retailers and consumers feeling the full force of the recession have been warned of the dangers posed by counterfeit goods.

According to the Alliance against IP Theft (AIT), there are likely to be many more fake products in circulation because of the economic downturn and the effect that it has had on retail spending.

Susan Winter, director general of the group, said that unregulated vendors, such as people selling products at markets or car boot sales, are a particular problem for the authorities.

As a result, she said that the AIT is "continually pressing" the government to issue a consultation on how markets can be better regulated.

"This is a great cause of concern given the potential harm these goods cause, both in terms of consumers being financially ripped off and their potentially dangerous nature," Ms Winter said.

Meanwhile, Trading Standards officers in the south-west have warned that they will be cracking down on the sale of fake goods over the summer, according to the Portsmouth News.
