'Vibrant independent retail sector' contributing to Cardiff success

The capital of Wales has been rated as a "thriving" city with an ever-expanding international reputation.

That is according to the latest City Centre Performance Report, which evaluates a city's health on what it's like to shop, live, work and visit there.

Cardiff faired well in the retail rankings, placing tenth in the UK for shopping destinations. A factor in the city's success was its "varied and vibrant independent retail sector", the Council noted.

Councillor Nigel Howells, executive member for Sport, Leisure & Culture, said that Cardiff's high placing in the report was testament to the city's increasing popularity and notoriety.

He commented: "This report shows that the city centre can rightly be regarded as a leading regional centre in the United Kingdom …. [having] strengthen[ed] our attractiveness to investors, shoppers and visitors".

Cardiff Council believes the city could rise up to eighth place once the redevelopment of the St David's Shopping Centre has been completed.
